His research focuses on environmental issues and civil society. Paulson has a PhD in sociology from Arizona State University. He has conducted extensive research on the topic of civil society and the environment. He is the Principal Investigator for a National Science Foundation sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates, focused on phosphorus pollution from a variety of disciplinary research angles (sociology, anthropology, economics, geology, and biology), titled LAKES (Linking Applied Knowledge in Environmental Sustainability).
