What to Know About Fall Internships 2022
A fall internship is work in which students or fresh graduates can build up experience toward their career path during the autumn months. In the Northern Hemisphere, fall internships usually start in early September (or late August).
Unlike summer internships, an internship during the fall season will likely take place and be as lengthy as a full semester of university. For this reason, a fall internship is more demanding, as it’s almost as if a student has two full jobs (college and the internship), though you might use that semester to be “off” from school activities as you focus on your internship responsibilities. There are usually fewer fall internships than summer internships, as well.
Like any internship program, the autumn version will have high school grads and college students learning the basics of the workplace, the company at which they’re hired, and their particular industry through hands-on mentorship and guidance. And, there are also remote fall internships, of course!

When to Apply for Fall Internships?
For larger companies, especially those which are the most popular, such as Google, Facebook, or Microsoft, begin your fall internship research as early as mid-June. For all other internships, you should be safe applying for an intern position during the first week of July and after.
Toward the end of July companies will start working hard to narrow down the internship candidates to a chosen few for internship interviews. By mid- to late-August, you should receive a rejection letter or internship offer.

Here are the most sought-after fall internship opportunities available this year:
1. Google
A Google internship is just about the most popular professional development opportunity for students out there. You’ll have to compete with thousands of other applicants, but, if you have the drive, go for it! On the Build Your Future website (linked below), you’ll find openings across engineering, technology, business, sales, marketing, and more.
On top of the regular internships, Google offers 20-month apprenticeships where you will “participate in on-the-job work experience and receive external training through a partner organization. Upon program completion, apprentices receive a nationally-recognized credential certified by the Department of Labor.” In the US, apprenticeships are available in Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, and Sunnyvale. Many of the fall apprenticeships begin in October.
2. NASA
The level of “awesome” an internship at NASA would be is just off the charts! The US space agency has plans to revisit the Moon again in 2024, and you can help them get there. Many students who intern and then graduate can become an astronaut candidate and possibly join their active astronaut corps. Deadline for applications is quite early for this one – July 9th!
3. United Nations
“If you are thinking of entering the world of diplomacy and public policy, an internship at the United Nations could be the ideal start for you.” If you have excellent skills in either English or French, are not related to a UN Secretariat staff member, and are in your final year of a bachelor’s degree program or enrolled in a master’s or PhD program, why not participate in the UN’s mission? Join them online or at any of their major locations, including New York, Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut, or Santiago.

4. Unilever
As a major multinational corporation, Unilever has opportunities for students with future career paths in almost every field. There are internships in marketing, research and development, customer development, finance, supply chain, human resources, communications, information technology (IT), legal, and procurement.
5. Tesla
With Tesla, you have the opportunity to work year-round, rather than just during the autumn months. However, they hire during only three seasons per year in the United States (Spring/Winter, Summer, and Fall). In the US, intern programs range anywhere from 3-12 months in length, while in Europe, each one is about 5-6 months long.
6. Spotify
The #1 music streaming platform has all types of programs for students, including internships, mentorships, master thesis programs, fellowships, and challenges. Their global summer internship opens applications during the previous fall, meaning you really need to know well in advance if you want to join them.

7. CBS Interactive
If you are an 18+ student enrolled in an accredited college, university, or bootcamp, join CBS Interactive for their part-time fall program at 20 hours per week for 15 weeks. The select few who make it into this program can advance their future careers with practice in video production, software engineering, social media, editorial, and more!
8. Penguin Random House
If you’re into the older form of media, why not one of the Big 4 publishers, Penguin Random House? Their paid fall internship program covers the entire spectrum of business fields, including finance, marketing, production, public relations, and operations. Students choosing to apply for the autumn program will get to work on Broadway, in the heart of New York City, for 14 hours per week for 10 weeks.
9. Samsung
Samsung internships are really more like prized startup jobs. You get health benefits, summer outings, commuter benefits, relocation assistance, and even a gift from Samsung (new phone, perhaps?). Available year-round and worldwide, they have available openings to apply for in engineering, design, and research. Make sure to wow their management with a perfectly written resume and cover letter before applying!

10. World Health Organization
The work of the World Health Organization (WHO) is extremely important, as we’ve seen throughout the coronavirus pandemic. “WHO’s Internship Programme offers a wide range of opportunities for graduate and postgraduate students to gain insight in the technical and administrative programmes of WHO while enriching their knowledge and experience in the health field, thereby contributing to the advancement public health.”
